Progressive Youth Organization, Kansas City
Points of unity express the basic nature and understanding of an organization and its members. An organization is more effective in moving forward if everyone shares the same vision of where its headed. We hold these points of unity as something every progressive person should strive towards. They’re not ranked in order of importance, or exhaustive, but each remains a vital building block to our understanding of the world. We will change our campus, our city, our country, and the entire world with this vision.
The people face dire conditions. Social ills plague our country, such as racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and the oppression of working people, resulting in unprecedented exploitation, poverty, and murder. We will fight to put an end to all of these. Dare to struggle! Dare to Win!
1. WE SUPPORT A FREE, UNIVERSAL, QUALITY AND PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION
We believe education is a right, not a privilege. We understand that everyone has a right to pursue their own education. We believe that this education should remain entirely free and accessible to all. We stand against any attempt to exclude anyone from the rights to a free education. We also demand a quality education. We declare that packed class rooms, dilapidated buildings, and subpar facilities that disproportionately harm the working class are unacceptable. We demand a quality education for all. Finally, the higher education system has served as a propaganda and indoctrination tool of the US empire, its corporations, and other oppressive institutions. We reject all imperialist propaganda and demand a progressive education that seeks to liberate the people, not only the mind.
2. WE OPPOSE U.S. WARS, ACTIONS, AND INTERVENTIONS ACROSS THE WORLD
The United States remains the single greatest cause of violence in the world today. The US engages in assassinations, coups, economic blockades, political and economic manipulation, and wars both open and closed. We have a responsibility as those living within the US to fight the United States’ aggression when and wherever it may arise. Every country has the right to its own development, free of US intervention, regardless of what we think of other countries, their governments, or their leaders. We stand in solidarity with all the liberation movements across the globe fighting US imperialism, and believe that all people have the right to be free.
3. WE OPPOSE U.S. OPPRESSION AND RACISM DOMESTICALLY AGAINST ALL PEOPLE, CULTURES, AND NATIONS
The United States has depended on war, slavery, and oppression since its beginning. This continues to manifest domestically in the form of racism, discrimination, and often open murder. We continue to see attacks on immigrants, and racist calls for mass deportations. We continue to see police and vigilante murders carried out against African Americans, Chicanos, immigrants and the black and chicano nations. We see the ongoing pillaging and disrespect of indigenous lands. We see mass incarceration as a continuation of slave-era policies. We see structural inequality in income, healthcare, and education. We stand and fight against all these injustices. We support the right of all these nations to determine their own future. Only struggle and liberation can lead to an equal and fair world free of racism and discrimination.
4. WE OPPOSE ALL GENDER AND SEXUAL OPPRESSION
Women and queer people everywhere face the danger of patriarchal violence in the home, the workplace, and in public. The patriarchal exploitation of women’s unpaid labor in the domestic sphere, and underpaid labor in the workforce, is an inherent feature of capitalism-imperialism. Patriarchy carries a class character, with working class and poor women bearing the brunt of its evils. Historically women and queer folks have played prominent roles in community building and struggles for liberation. We must engage our women and queer siblings to become full participants and vocal non-token leaders in the fight for our collective liberation. We must demand accessible childcare and women’s health services on campuses. We must fight to create a more open world where people have equality and freedom regardless of their gender or sexuality.
5. WE SUPPORT ALL WORKING CLASS STRUGGLES
The political and economic system exists for the sake of the ruling elite. It oppresses and exploits workers of all varieties. Capitalism has failed our generation, and put our collective future at risk, and so we must take up the task to build a more just society – a socialist society. We stand with the working class. We know that some day the vast majority of students will join with the working class. It’s not simply the right thing to fight for the working class, it’s in the students’ interest. We stand with all workers struggles on and off campus, local and international, union and not, against the perils of capitalism.
We see growing radicalization in the streets. No thinking person has faith in the corrupt political system or its two parties. No thinking person can support the brutal armed occupations of the US both international and domestic. No thinking person can stand the ongoing racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and bigotry. It’s time to take action.
BUILD THE PROGRESSIVE YOUTH ORGANIZATION!
DARE TO STRUGGLE! DARE TO WIN!
